Chapter Eight

The

Raid

Of all the strange events of a very strange day,

thought Captain Harry Carruthers, this was

by far the strangest. He was climbing over the

rooftops of London's Docklands, w i t h a girl

dressed as a boy.

Maybe he should never have ordered the

champagne!

As soon as she'd explained her plan, Martha

had insisted on returning to his rooms. There

she'd made h i m use his new telephone to

contact a number of highly placed officials

and civil servants. By making use of his royal

connections, Harry had finally reached the

right department. Soon afterwards, a messenger

had delivered a stack of papers and documents.

They were maps and plans of the streets around

Black Dog Lane. It hadn't taken Martha long to

find what she wanted.

There!' she said, jabbing her finger at the

plan. ' A n empty warehouse backing onto the

Cosmic Peacemaker laboratories. Just what we

need! We'll go in over the roofs.'

Carruthers was horrified. 'My dear girl, don't

you realise? I ' m a Guards officer. I ' m not allowed

to carry parcels in the street, let alone commit

burglary.'

Martha ignored h i m . She looked d o w n at her

tweed walking outfit, w h i c h had been bugging

her all day.

'And another thing, I can't go climbing over

roofs in this get-up. What kind of clothes have

you got here?'

Carruthers was outraged. 'I can assure you

that no young ladies are in the habit of keeping

their clothes in my rooms!'

Martha laughed. 'I don't mean girls' clothes,

you t w i t , I mean men's clothes. Your clothes

w i l l do. You're only a bit taller than me.'

'I hardly think there w i l l be anything

suitable.'

'Don't you have any jeans or anything? No,

you wouldn't have, would you. What do you

wear when you're not dressed up?'

' I ' m always dressed up,' said Carruthers

simply. 'Hang on a minute...'

He went into his bedroom and opened his

uniform closet. After much searching, he came

back w i t h a set of denim overalls.

'I wear these when training. Even Guards

officers have to get dirty now and then, and one

doesn't want to spoil the bearskin and scarlet

t u n i c '

'Perfect,' said Martha. She took the overalls

from h i m and went into the bedroom.

A few minutes later, she returned in the denim

overalls. The trouser bottoms were rolled up, but

they fitted very well. Perhaps a little too well.

'How do I look?'

'Like Vesta Tilley!'

'Who?'

'Music hall performer. She sings dressed as a

man.'

'Thanks a lot. They're a bit tight, but they'll

do. Now, all I need is an overcoat and hat and

I ' m all set. Come on!'

W i t h Martha wrapped up in a coat and hat,

they'd called a hansom and returned to Black

Dog Lane. Martha found the empty warehouse

in a nearby alley. She took off her coat and hat

and climbed up a drainpipe.

Harry followed. After all, he thought, what

else could he do?

Now he was climbing over the warehouse

rooftop after Martha, clinging on for dear life.

He found her crouching by a skylight, her

form outlined against the sky.

'This is it - I hope! If my calculations are OK,

we're directly over the Peacemaker place.
